That left only other definition for this printer and, since it had a different name - the actual name of the printer - I decided to leave it and reboot. On reboot the PrintSpooler started and kept running. So problem seemed to be solved again.

None of what I found and did made much sense so I decided to wait before posting this reply, to see if the definitions came back or the problem returned. I had a bunch of Windows updates yesterday and after they were installed printing problem showed up again. Checked and PrintSpooler was not running. Checked list of printers and the "bogus" definitions I had removed were back again. I removed them again, rebooted an problem seems to be solved again. So, I'm not really sure if the bogus definitions are being "regenerated" by Windows or Windows Updates but I will have to keep an eye on this and see if the problem occurs again.

Its a nuisance and I never had this problem before, either in Windows 10 used for past 3 years or so or back in Windows 7. I was printing an excel spreadsheet.

Because the spreadsheet was printing too many pages, in printer choices I selected Microsoft print to PDF. You can also perform the same operation in the Services app. Besides, you can make more changes in the service here. You just need to invoke the Run window, input services.

Then, scroll down to locate the Print Spooler service. If the service is stopped, you can click Start the service in the left pane, or choose Start from the context menu.
