We aspire to achieve true workforce diversity in general surgery through mentoring, advocacy, and the cultivation of an inclusive work environment. In surgical training, there is no substitute for the breadth and depth of clinical experience. Residents grow comfortable in the management of both highly complex and common general surgery ailments, as well as the structural determinants of health across patient populations. Residents develop expertise in the management of complex disease at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, the highest ranked medical center on the West Coast and an international referral center.

Harbor boasts a well-rounded, dedicated faculty of full time academicians, each appointed by the UCLA School of Medicine.

The majority of our surgical services MIS, pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and surgical oncology do not have fellows, so there is no competition for resident cases.

Finally, we are one of the few County hospitals in the US to have two da Vinci robots and have an organized curriculum for resident training. Resident research is an expectation between the 3 rd and 4 th year of training and sponsored by the institution.

An annual resident research competition allows each resident to showcase their work to the department. Over a third have gone on to academic careers. We are most proud of the exceptional quality of our residents — from entering, aspiring surgeons to accomplished, graduating Chiefs. The Department of Surgery has a stellar history of research with fundamental discoveries in basic, translational, and clinical sciences that have shaped the practice of Surgery and Medicine both nationally and internationally.

The UCLA Department of Surgery has full-time faculty participating in teaching, research, and clinical activities at UCLA and its major affiliated hospitals; voluntary faculty; 16 fellows; and residents.
