On the Regional and Language Options page, select the appropriate options, and then click Customize to change the locale or keyboard settings from the default. Locale settings affect how numbers, currencies, and dates appear. When you are finished, click Next. On the Personalize Your Software page, enter a user name and an organization name, and then click Next. Check with your instructor for the values to enter on this page.
Enter a Computer Name and an Administrator Password. You should have a consistent naming convention for computers. Your instructor will supply this information. Be sure to write down the Administrator password, and store it in a secure place. Your school might have a common Administrator password for all computers.
Some organizations have a common schema for creating Administrator passwords; for example, one that includes a portion of the computer name.
On the next page, enter a date and time setting, and then click Next. On the Network Settings page, select a Typical or Custom installation. A Custom installation enables you to select various networking protocols, and to assign static IP addresses to computers.
On the Workgroup or Computer Domain page, determine if you want to install the computer in a workgroup or a domain. These options are explained below.
Installing Windows XP Professional 45 Installing in a Workgroup: If the school does not have a domain, but you want this computer to be networked with other local computers, enter the name of a workgroup that contains those other computers. Installing in a Domain: If your school has a domain, and you want to join the computer to it, you need to provide domain credentials a user name and password for a domain user account that is allowed to join computers to the domain.
By default, each user with an account in a domain can join up to 10 computers to the domain. Once you have made your selection, click Next. The computer will restart At first logon, you are prompted to activate this copy of Windows XP Professional. If you are connected to the Internet, select Activate Now. If the computer is not connected to the Internet, ask your instructor how to activate this copy of Windows XP Professional.

Keeping hardware drivers updated helps the hardware devices in the computer run at peak performance and improves compatibility with other computer hardware and software.
Note If you're replacing the hard drive in your computer, you need to reinstall Windows again. Tip If you want to upgrade to a newer version of Windows on your computer, the steps on this page help you with the upgrade process. Note The install guidelines for Windows for a server have additional steps based on the type of server and version of Windows. Note With early versions of Windows, you cannot download a copy of Windows to install on a computer.
Warning Microsoft has Windows 10 and 11 available for download only from their website. Upgrade Note If you are upgrading to a newer version of Windows, select the Upgrade option instead of the Full Install option.
Tip You can use the erase all contents option to uninstall an existing version of Windows on the hard drive, then install Windows again. This will allow you to load the Windows XP setup files before your computer boots to its installed operating system. Click the green "BIOS" link for more information. You may need to have the USB drive inserted for it to appear as an option.
Part 2. Load the installer. Your computer will reboot and you will be presented with the message: Press any key to boot from CD. Press any key on your keyboard to start the Setup program. Setup will load files necessary to begin the installation, which may take a few moments. Once the loading is complete, you will be taken to the Welcome screen. Read the License Agreement. After reading, press F8 indicating you agree to the terms.
Select the partition you want to install on. You will see a list of available partitions on your installed hard drives. If you are installing Windows XP on a new hard drive, you should see only one entry labeled "Unpartitioned space. Installing Windows XP will erase all of the data on the partition that you choose. Select a partition that is empty or that contains data that you do not care to lose. Any data on the partition will be lost when it is deleted. Create a new partition.
By default, the partition will be set to the maximum amount of available space. Unless you plan on creating multiple partitions, you can usually leave this at its default. Windows XP requires at least 1. You can create multiple partitions on a single drive. This can allow you to separate your programs from your movies and music, or to install another operating system. Windows XP can only be installed on one discrete partition. Select your new partition. NTFS is the preferred method, supporting a larger amount of disk space per partition than FAT, and including security features at the file system level.
NTFS also includes system level compression. There are almost no situations anymore where choosing FAT would be preferable. It is highly recommended to avoid Quick Format, as this skips an important process that checks the hard drive for errors or bad sectors.
This scan is what consumes the majority of the time taken when performing a full format. If there are errors on a disk at the physical level, it's best to catch them now rather than later. Wait for the format to complete. The system will now format the partition. The length of time this process requires depends on the speed and size of the drive. In general, the larger the partition, the longer the process will take.
Wait for the Setup files to copy. Windows will now start copying files from the installation disc and prompt you to reboot the computer when the process is completed. Allow the computer to boot normally. You will see the message asking you to press a key to boot from CD.
